Calstar makes a lot of heavy rods which are utilized for tuna and marlin of many hundred pounds. Scroll to the bottom of this page for a list: http://www.calstarrods.net/westcoast.htm . (Other organizations make similar-sized rods, I’m just a lot more familiar with Calstar, and it’s a excellent brand.)

Anyway, the thickest is not what you really should be asking, it is how heavy line it’s designed for. The rods at the bottom of this page are made for line from 50 to 120 pound test, which should be much more than adequate for 79 pound catfish. However, it’s challenging to cast a short heavy rod with roller guides.

If you check their rod blank page, (http://www.calstarrods.net/fiberglass.htm) the butt diameter of numerous blanks are listed. The thickest is the “540″ at 1.300 inches, but that’s a 10-foot rod produced for 20-50 pound line, not close to their strongest rod. But you can cast it a long approaches.

You almost certainly want one thing in among, but from these pages you should get a excellent idea of what’s offered.

Thick all around rod, I believe you mean large butt diameter and large tip size. Well, as for tip size you can reach 30/64 and butt diameter 1.500 inch special order. You can look at having a fishing rod built for you or check http://www.seekerrods.com/rods.html and http://www.calstarrods.net/fiberglass.htm already mentioned by Peter.
    Suggestion Calstar BWC-660H-C or BWC-665H-C.
Peter pointed out a blank T540 a 10 foot with butt diameter of 1.300 inch and tip size 9/64 ..A blank as that can be modifield either by triming the butt or tip, to get the desire taper/action and power it can also elevate the lure weight, etc.

You will want to pick a fishing rod with a hefty tip size around 9, 10, 11/64
And no less then .860 inch butt diameter.. 6-feet or 6ft-6 inches in length ..Graphite reelseat are great for cold weather as they don’t become cold as aluminum reelseats, Fuji tackle has a great heavy duty graphite reelseat look at the DPSH or FPSH http://www.fujitackle.net/Portals/Anglersresource/catalog/index.html#52. If you like to further look into Fuji go here http://www.fujitackle.net/Portals/Anglersresource/catalog/index.html
You can also look into Aftco http://www.aftco.com/catalog/index.htm and Winthrop http://www.winthroptackle.com/ these are just but a few.
Rather get a better idea of what is out there, here is a good place to start http://www.mudhole.com/
This is basic information that might enable you to better pick the rod you require without advising you on what you should get…

Answers given to you by anyone here should be considered advice as to what fishing rod you could use, and that is out of experience from those in Yahoo Answers, so you don’t make the same mistakes they made..Its not a selfish act but a reasonable one. I understand you don’t always get the answer you want but you can ask again differently.
