Question by : What state offers a good “North Woods Deer Hunting” experience for out of state hunters?
I hunt in Southern California. I usually hunt deer with a scoped .243 in very steep terrain, in woods where there are pine trees spaced pretty far apart (Angeles National Forest right behind Los Angeles—it’s a 40 mile by 80 mile forest with 10,000 foot peaks).

I have always wondered what it is like to hunt deer with on open sight .30-30 in thick woods and snow.

Is there any state that offers thick woods hunting that is friendly and accessible to out of state hunters without a guided hunt?

Believe it or not = upstate New York….. Many people here use a rifle in 30-30 open sites…. Most shots are under 100 yards….. I’m talking about areas over 100 miles north of New York City….. Albany, Utica, Syracuse, rochester and all points north…. Western new york west of route 81 offers excellent hunting that fits your criteria….

Minnesota. Monday was 16 degrees with a low of -3. Lots of cold and always a lot of snow. Mn has lots of public access to hunting land, all you have to do is go set up and wait. The numbers of deer at at a near high record. And the woods is thick too. Rifle season is Nov 5-Nov 21, dont expect to have much snow, you can muzzleload in december and will have lots of snow.

I have to agree with NY. The Adirondack Park in northern NY is a 6 million acre forest where most of the land is open for free hunting. This park is larger than the 5 largest western federal parks combined. Just be aware that there is no cell phone service in most of the park and GPS only works on the exposed southern face of mountains. If you get lost you are probably toast and don’t go in the woods without a compass and map.

If you want to hunt big bucks come to Illinois we are the official land of the giants but you can’t hunt deer with rifles here. I would go to Canada because they allow alot of stuff the U.S. doesn’t.
