Question by kmb_ent: What are those big bugs in SC and GA that appear like grossly overgrown houseflies?
My mother often known as them “dry flies.” I thought maybe cicadas, but isn’t that a locust? These honestly appear like flies that are about 2 or three inches across. Scary points. Is it that or cicadas that make the scratchy rattly sounds in summer?

We’ve always called them horse-flies. They appear to be huge flies that can also deliver one heck of a sting when the sting or bite you.
