In no way should a ski boot ever “fit” so as it cuts off circulation or makes the lower leg and foot numb or painful.

A boot should have a snug fit around the heel, fit well around the arch and instep, and there should be room in the toe box to wiggle your toes. The upper part of the boot can be highly adjusted to fit most sizes of calf muscles. The buckles can be completely reset (usually in three positions) and further adjusted using the micro-adjusting screws on the buckles themselves. The power strap should be sung, but not so tight that it causes the buckles to be ineffective. Canting screws are usually on most boots to adjust stance and there is usually a plate along the rear of the boot to custom fit the way the boot fits against the back of the leg.

You should wear one pair of socks that go up to the knee. They should be snug and not be able to fall down or bunch up in the boot.

Further fitting adjustments can be done by a ski shop or boot fitter with the proper skills and equipment. This involves simple things like re-molding the boot liners and adding supports. It can also involve detailed work with custom footbeds and remolding the shell of the boots. That can get expensive.

If your boots aren’t fitting well, and you can no longer adjust them yourself to make them comfortable, the go visit a good boot fitter.
