Sir,
do you know if there are cornbread recipes that are good for fire top ?
Most of the ones i am familiar with are for an oven.
Thank you

I made a batch of whole wheat bannock…using your recipe…and it is pretty decent. Whole wheat flour has a different texture and flavor, but if you put butter, peanutbutter, or honey on it…it is REALLY good. I might try adding some cinnamin into the mixture for added variety. Good stuff!

Heres a little tip. Try using clarified butter, it keeps well in a pack for a long while, and gives you the use of oil with the flavor of butter. A little goes a long way.

It amazes me how this has the feel of a lost survival food when it is basically Bisquick or basic pancake mix. hehe

Looks good. I’ve seen online, some people cook this over an open fire. Find a green stick that’s not pine and wrap the Bannock dough around the stick. I really want to try this stuff. Great vid thanks.

If you had another base (stove for the canteen cup) you place it over the top and use it as a form to keep it from running down the sides. Syrup is also great to use on it…

It is a bread normally cooked on a griddle from Scotland that was a precursor to scones. I cooked on the top of the cup to show that it is possible if you have nothing to cook it on. You can also put the dough on a tilted board towards the fire or in a skillet.

how would one dehydrate things? i know there’s machines that will do it, but how would i dehydrate it without one? i know it’s possible, i just dont’ understand the process.

regular breakfast sausage, my favorite it the maple flavored… some of that cooked then dehydrated. bannock mix. powdered milk. salt. pepper. Use some of the bannack mix and powdered milk with water to make a white gravy and season with salt and pepper and rehydrated sausage. use the rest of the bannock mix to make bannock on a stick and you can dip the bannock into the sausage gravy… just like biscuits with gravy!

Thats a great trick – I will have to try that – what kind of sausage do you like to trow in?

you can dehydrate cooked sausage nuggets and just rehydrate them while mixing your batter and add it in to the bannack before cooking. makes a ncie meal. or you can add rehydrated fruit for a sweet bread.

Great job!
Bannock is delicious. Many years ago a guide in Canada showed us how to cook it over an open fire. He just wrapped it on a stick.

That is definately a cleaner way in the field, the dough is some very sticky stuff at times!
