Question by Micah Moffitt: How to uncover out who stole a treestand?
I have recently been back to where i had a treestand put up in a little honey hole only to discover an individual has stolen my treestand. I thought about putting up one more treestand with a trail camera watching it, but then when the flash went off they would just steal it too. Any concepts on how to catch them? I know they dont have permission to be on the property for sure and I suspect they will be back soon. Thanks for any answers!

you probably can’t catch them unless you are there when they attempt once more. but you can make a fake sign saying there is a video camera.

The police won’t help unless you basically catch the perps red-handed. And booby-trapping it can get you in trouble. If you can hide a trail camera put a piece of tape over the flash.
Or you do my uncles trick ,steel cable and a master lock
Finders keepers they say. If it’s private property as you say it is, report it to the landowner and the local sheriff. Set your trail camera out with the flash deactivated. Hide it well too they may not see the flash if it happened during the day. Also mark all the trails in and out of the stand location it could be an anti hunter harassing you from neighboring property.
you could set up another one take pics of the act follow him to his truck get his plate numbers and give all the info to the cops
i don’t think confronting him in the woods with a gun is the way to go
he is obviously a hunter so he might be armed as well.
i am all for protecting whats yours with a gun and all but if you end up shooting and killing him it makes you sound like you had planned on it
you set up another one and waited with a gun for someone to come steal it?
sounds like an investigation to me
if its your land it was illegal if it was state land it was not illegal in state land the stand is no longer yours its the states and anyone can take it without getting in trouble but if it was your land but you didnt see who theres not much you can do and that trail cam is a good idea if the flash was infrared but since it isnt theres nothing you can do but you can however hide out and takes pics of the tresspasser but thats kinda dangerous i would use a spotting scope with a camera and take pics of the guy from a distance that could work but still a little dangerous
This happens EVERY season. You don’t want to know how many times people put their stands out and have them stolen. It happened to two different friends of mine.
Some homeowner’s policies will cover the theft of property, even if it did not happen at your residence. If you have such a policy, see if you can collect a bit of insurance money from it.
Also, chances are that they thief or thieves did not do it in the dark; too much trouble and hard to stumble around when it’s dark outside. They probably stole in during the daylight hours. So, yes, a camo trailcam attached high in a tree, pointing at your stand, with the flash turned off would maybe do the trick.
