i fish with wet flies regularly
the way you are fishig is very correct rather than with the figure of eight
one more thing try starting at the bottom of a run with a three fly cast
i use a olive spider and a black spider and a yellow spider
cast 8 or 9 yards upstream and track the line downstream but dont let it go below the rod tip
its much like czech nymphing but with more line
try tying some clyde style paterns and give them a whack
tight lines
