Question by : What state offers a good “North Woods Deer Hunting” experience for out of state hunters?
I hunt in Southern California. I usually hunt deer with a scoped .243 in very steep terrain, in woods where there are pine trees spaced pretty far apart (Angeles National Forest right behind Los Angeles—it’s a 40 mile by 80 mile forest with 10,000 foot peaks).
I have always wondered what it is like to hunt deer with on open sight .30-30 in thick woods and snow.
Is there any state that offers thick woods hunting that is friendly and accessible to out of state hunters without a guided hunt?

Answer by METROPOLIS1 Believe it or not = upstate New York….. Many people here use a rifle in 30-30 open sites…. Most shots are under 100 yards….. I’m talking about areas over 100 miles north of New York City….. Albany, Utica, Syracuse, rochester and all points north…. Western new york west of route 81 offers excellent hunting that fits your criteria….
Question by : What causes a shotgun to accidentally fire?
I am doing some research for a classroom discussion about dirt and grime build ups causing a shotgun to fire on accident. I know the shotguns we were issued in the Marine Corps had a tendency to fire when hit hard, but that is the case for many firearms right? Could a shotgun fire because of dirt and grime buildup?

Answer by Newell I guess so much dirt was in the firing pin channel, that the firing pin could not retract. When you close the bolt, the gun slam fired. Just a guess.
You can take an M-16 apart quite easily. I have no idea how you take a shotgun apart.
Most people don’t know how to strip a shotgun. So the dirt would just build up. In some place like Iraq, with talcum power dust and grit, it wouldn’t take long to jam the firing pin spring.
I doubt very many people know how to field strip the firing pin spring channel on a Mossberg 590.
Pump shotguns, unlike military weapons, are not designed to be field stripped by non armorers.
